Affordable Custom Promise Rings in 4 Easy Steps

Promise rings are romantic and fulfilling. Couples that choose to wear promise rings want to show the world that they are loyal and proud of their partner. In case you’re just hearing about them now, a “promise ring” is a ring or band worn prior to engagement to show the wearer is promised to their beloved. Some couples choose to wear them in a pre-engagement phase to mark their love. Others wear them while saving for an engagement ring. While traditionally only worn by her, it is now common for men to wear promise rings today too. Both my husband and I wore them before we got married – and I love mine so much I still wear it on my right hand!

Here’s how to custom design the perfect affordable, high-end promise ring in 4 easy steps:

Step One: Who is it For?

Promise Ring For Her

Most promise rings for women are gemstone rings that are beautiful and easy to wear. Because promise rings do not need to have a wedding band next to it, you can pick a much more fanciful or asymmetric style! Keep in mind that you want her to love it so much she switches it to her right hand after you get married. So, while you want to choose something that is her style, you also want it to be different enough from her future engagement ring that she’ll be able to wear both without them looking too similar.

Promise Ring For Men

Most promise rings for men are bands with a more ornament than a traditional, simple wedding band. So, check out styles with eye-catching finishes that will set it apart from what you think his future wedding band will look like.

Step Two: What Style are They?

Promise Ring For Her

The next step is choosing her style. Does she like classic designs? A simple, low profile setting highlighting the gem of your choice would be perfect. Want a little extra glam? A few small diamonds will contrast fabulously with your colored gemstone center. I happen to think our Lily ring, with its ribbon of diamonds, is an incredible value at $680 in 14k gold including custom engraving! Just add a gem For those looking for a real knock-out, you can pave the entire band with diamonds too!

Promise Ring For Men

When choosing a style for your guy, think about his lifestyle. Does he work with his hands? Is he in an office? Is he laid back, or does he like to dress up? For men who work with their hands, a hammered band is a great look. Those that are dressier may like a bit of shine. However, a really special ring for your man could include your fingerprint. A fingerprint ring is super special, very subtle, and will definitely be different than his wedding band.

Fingerprint Promise Rings For Couples

Want matching promise rings for couples? That’s so awesome. I like your style. My favorite option is our fingerprint collection. A fingerprint ring is super special, very subtle, and means you each can carry around a piece of the other everywhere you go. We carry a thicker band for men, and a thinner band for ladies (you can even stack other rings with it!)

Step Three: What Color Do They Wear?

Promise Ring For Her

Our rings are available in white, yellow, and rose gold, along with platinum and palladium. Because you’re trying to keep to a budget with this custom promise ring, we suggest choosing gold. So, look at her other jewelry. If she wears white metals like silver and white gold, stick with white. If she wears yellow, you have the option of yellow or rose! Rose gold is a warm tone, with just a little more pink than yellow.

Promise Ring For Men

If  your guy wears other jewelry, same goes for your man! What color does he wear? Also, check out his watch for clues. However, if he’s like a lot of guys, maybe he doesn’t wear a watch or any jewelry yet. If so, here’s a quick guide on how to pick the right color gold based on skin-tone:

  • Cool skin tones – go for white gold.
  • Warm skin tones – go for yellow or rose gold.

Step Four: Give it Meaning

Promise Ring For Her

Choose a center gemstone that has meaning. Maybe the gemstone of the month you started dating? Or maybe your birthstone would make her smile. What about the color of her eyes? Her favorite nail polish color? Or possibly the gemstone representing the month you give this special promise ring to her. There are affordable gemstone options in every color – we can add any of these 6mm top-quality natural AAA gems to your custom ring for less than $200!

Planning a Wedding Budget (The Easy Way)

Getting married is fun. Planning a budget is not.

But here’s the thing:

It’s necessary.

While most guides to wedding planning and planning your wedding budget focus specifically on the big day, that’s not all that matters. To revel in a stress free married life, you should plan in three parts:

  • Before the Wedding
  • The Big Day
  • After the Wedding

You’ll see that a little planning will go a long way. And it’s not as stressful as you’d think. Okay, let’s get into it!

Planning a Wedding Budget

Before the Wedding

Saving money and budgeting pre-wedding is one of the most important measures you can take. Here are a few big ticket wins to focus on:

Engagement Ring

We actually wrote a whole guide on how to choose an affordable engagement ring. But if you want the SparkNotes, here’s the gist of it:

Tip #1: Stay away from platinum.

While both gold and platinum are priced similarly per gram, platinum is denser. It’s a wonderful metal, but it’s the most expensive. The best options for beautiful and affordable engagement rings are 14k white gold and palladium. (side note: all of our rings are ethically made with 100% recycled metals, whichever metal you go with)

Tip #3: Consider Moissanite or Sapphire.

Moissanite was originally discovered in a meteor crater and is a super rare mineral. It looks very similar to a diamond. Actually, it’s more brilliant than a diamond, which is why some people prefer Forever Brilliant Moissanite to diamonds. Check our our post on diamonds vs moissanite if you’d like to learn more.

Though more people think of sapphites as being blue, they’re actually available in all the colors of the rainbow. Even excellent quality sapphires (AAA rating) can offer substantial savings over a diamond.

Engagement Ring Insurance

Engagement ring insurance is probably a good idea. It usually costs from $1-$2 per year for every $100 it would cost to replace. Basically this means if your ring would cost $7000 to replace, insurance would be $70-$140 per year. This goes back to our previous point – if you save money on your engagement ring, you’ll save money on your engagement ring insurance.

The Key to Saving for Your Wedding

The strategy is simple:

Set small goals.

Instead of impossibly ambitious goals, set yourself up for victory. When saving for the wedding, set up little challenges. One example: eat dinner at home 5 days a week. Other than that, indulge guilt free.

In addition, if it helps you shop, it’s okay to go to Whole Foods instead of a cheaper grocery store. Overall, if you shop and cook at home, you’ll eat healthier, eat at home, and save money. Whatever incentivizes you to do that will result in a small victory that adds up over time.

Finally, when you cook at home, make extra so you have lunch leftovers. Again, this helps you eat more healthfully and saves you money. Though for the sake of sanity, you should definitely feel free to hit up Chipotle now and then still 🙂

The important lesson to take away:

Set up savings habits that will not only carry you to your wedding day, but will allow you to flourish for a lifetime in financial stability.

The Big Day: How to Plan a Wedding on a Budget

As for the actual wedding, there are a thousands ways to save money and still enjoy your most special day:

  • Schedule the wedding in off-peak season.
  • Don’t get married on a Saturday.
  • Consider an on-campus marriage ceremony.
  • Fake your wedding cake (or forego it).
  • Hire a friend as a DJ.
  • Choose a nontraditional venue.

There are also a ton of creative and green ways to save money on your wedding. Let me give you a few ideas:

  • Consider buying instead of renting a tuxedo. Something you can wear the next 10 years. Chances are, it will look better than the one size fits all that you would have rented. Plus, you’ll get to wear it on swanky occasions for a while.
  • Champagne toasts are one of the biggest wastes of money at a wedding. Do a clean water toast instead and use that moment to be thankful for having clean water.
  • Get creative with wedding favors. Often, these are wasteful trinkets. Instead, think about donating some dinero for each guest in a cause you like.

The Honeymoon

Go nuts. It’s your honeymoon; enjoy it!

Honeymoon

After the Wedding

Truth is, after the wedding, saving is just a continuation of your pre-wedding habits.

Small wins, automated savings, open communication, etc, etc.

There are a couple creative habits you can set for your relationship, though. Here’s one from Do Amore founder, Krish:

“Set expectations for gifts. For example, my wife and I love to travel. So we decided that each year, instead of traditional anniversary gifts, we trade turns planning our annual trip. On our anniversary day, we’re excited to hear this year’s travel plans. It’s actually much more fun than opening a box of chocolates! And it’s a lot more practical, since we’d take a trip anyway.”

Quick Introductions: Meet Moissanite, The Non-Diamond

There’s a word buzzing around the ring world and it just might need to make it’s way to your lips. Moissanite.  When shopping around for the perfect way to ask “Will you marry me?”, it’s time to consider a stone from the stars.  You will not only change the life of your loved one when you slip this ring on their finger, but also the lives of someone in need!

DoAmore Moissanite Engagement Rings What Is Moissanite Do AmoreOriginally mistaken for an actual diamond, chemist Henri Moissan first encountered these crystals while, get this, examining rock samples from a meteor crater in the Canyon Diablo, Arizona in 1893. Yep, a meteor’s crater.  Moissanite is a naturally occurring silicon carbide and in it’s natural form, rivals the rarity of diamonds.

Before the 1950’s there was no other source for these stones other than meteorites (I still can’t get over that). In 1958, moissanite was found the Green River Formation in Wyoming as well as in a diamond mine in Yakutia in 1959.  Forever Brilliant Moissanite is 10% more brilliant than diamonds and reflects 2 times the light of diamonds, emeralds or sapphires!  Not to mention it is nearly colorless, so it often times catches more stares and starts more conversations than diamonds.

Now that we’ve got a little history, take the time to check out our collection of moissanite, which, as you now know, was even mistaken for a diamond by a geologists, so it’s sure to pack the glimmer of diamonds while saving you a considerable amount of money.  Wedding and engagement rings are simply symbols of your love.  At Do Amore, we want your love to shine it’s brightest, and brighten the lives of those in need.  With each ring purchase from Do Amore, your love amplifies, providing water for those in need!

Cheap Engagement Rings | How to Buy Cheap & Affordable Engagement Rings

Cheap Engagement Rings Tip #1: Stay away from Platinum

Platinum has some benefits, but a platinum ring will cost substantially more than a 14k gold ring. Although both metals are priced similarly per gram, a gram of platinum takes up less volume than a gram of gold, so more of it is needed. I also recommend staying away from 18k gold because not only is it more expensive than 14k gold, it is also softer and can be scratched more easily. 14k white gold or palladium are the better options when looking for affordable engagement rings! Read more about Gold vs Platinum.

Cheap Engagement Rings Tip #2: Consider Moissanite or Sapphire

Although I go over tips on selecting an affordable diamond below, they are still one of the most expensive options for a center stone. If you are on a budget, other options  can make a ring more affordable, yet just as beautiful. Two of these options are moissanite and sapphire.

Moissanite

Moissanite was originally discovered in a meteor, and is an extremely rare mineral. That’s why moissanite, as we know it in jewelry, is exclusively lab created. The main advantage of moissanite is that it is very similar in look to a diamond (some actually prefer the look over diamonds), but costs a lot less. The below table compares the stones in pricing:

Diamond Carat WeightGIA Certified Round Diamond (I-color, VS2)MoissaniteForever-Brilliant Moissanite
0.5$1,000+$90$180
1.0$4,000+$270$400
1.5$10,000+$450$700

Our post on Diamonds vs Moissanite compares the two stones in more depth, and also discusses Forever Brilliant Moissanite. All of these engagement rings are available with moissanite center stones.

Sapphire

Sapphire is a natural, precious stone and is one of the most sought after centerstones. Typically thought of as blue, sapphires are actually available in all the colors of the rainbow. Even excellent quality sapphires (AAA rating) can offer substantial savings over a diamond.

Diamond Carat WeightGIA Certified Round Diamond (I-color, VS2)Round Blue Sapphire (Natural, AAA)Round Pink Sapphire (Natural, AAA)
0.5$1,000+$840$780
1.0$4,000+$2,000$1,800
1.5$10,000+$3,300$2,700

As you can see, natural sapphires can offer significant savings over a diamond. Other gemstones, such aquamarine and rubies, are even less costly than sapphires. All of these engagement rings are available with any gemstone, including sapphire, aquamarine, and topaz.

Cheap Engagement Rings Tip #3: Don’t Pick the Best Color and Clarity

When looking for affordable engagement rings, a large part of the savings will come when choosing the center stone. If you elect for a diamond, then there are several criteria you should consider when using our diamond search tool:

Diamond Color

A GIA-certified diamond will have a color rating that typically ranges from D (colorless) to K (faint yellow). If you are on a budget, it would be wise to stay out of the colorless range (D-F). The price difference between a colorless diamond and a near colorless diamond can be substantial. If you want a diamond that appears colorless, then I would recommend a G color diamond, but if you are okay with a diamond that has a very slight tinge of yellow, then I recommend an I color diamond.

Diamond Color Scale for Cheap Engagement Rings
Diamonds tend to decrease in price as you go from the left to the right (colorless to faint). When looking for affordable engagement rings, stay out of the colorless range.

Diamond Clarity

A GIA-certified diamond will have a clarity rating that ranges from F (flawless) to I (included). Clarity refers to how many imperfections a diamond has, and a flawless diamond means there are no imperfections. A diamond with a VS2 clarity rating has very few imperfections, but they can’t be seen with the naked eye. SI1 rated diamonds’ imperfections can technically be seen with the naked eye, but most everyday people wouldn’t be able to find them. For people on a budget, I recommend purchasing a diamond starting in the SI1 or SI2 range. If you are okay with some minor imperfections that can be seen with the naked eye upon close examination, then an I1 could be a great possibility as well.

Diamond Clarity Scale when considering budget for engagement rings
People on a budget should consider a slightly included diamond (SI1 or SI2), or even a higher-rated included diamond (I1).

Diamond Cut

GIA-certified round diamonds have cut ratings that range from poor to excellent. A diamond’s cut is what gives a diamond its brilliance, or sparkle. Because most yearn for a diamond with sparkle, this is one of the most important criteria when considering a diamond. A poorly cut diamond does not optimally reflect light, and will therefore appear more dull and less brilliant than a well cut diamond. It is wise to pick the best cut diamond you can find within your budget, and when looking for affordable engagement rings, it is usually worth sacrificing a color or clarity rating if it gets you a better cut. Because cut is slightly complicated, please feel free to contact us when picking a diamond and we would be more than happy to advise you.
