Carat Though most think of "Carat" in terms of size, it is actually a measure of the weight of the diamond. Sometimes you can save money by finding diamonds that are just under the carat weight of what you want (example, look for .95-.99 carats instead of 1.00).
Price The price of the diamond in US dollars.
Cut Cut is the most important variable and directly correlates to how much sparkle your stone will have. The highest rating the GIA gives is "excellent" and only to round shapes. Together with our suppliers, we assign cut grades to fancy shaped stones to help you compare stones.
Color D-F color diamonds have no color and are "ice-white". G-H color diamonds generally look colorless unless you have a colorless stone next to them. I-J color diamonds have a very slight warmth to them which isn't usually noticeable in diamonds less than 0.75 carats.
Clarity Clarity is rating of how many imperfections a diamond has, and how big they are. For most shapes, diamonds up to VS2 are "eye-clean" (no imperfections visible to the naked eye) however in many cases even SI1-SI2 diamonds are eye clean. If you want to make sure your diamond is eye-clean, contact us with the diamond you like, or look at our recommended diamonds.
Depth A percentage measuring the depth (or height) of the diamond, divided by the width. This percentage directly correlates to the cut rating, and we don't recommend changing this percentage if you are unfamiliar with it. Contact us and we would love to help.
Table A percentage measuring width of the top facet of the diamond divided by the overall width of the diamond. This percentage directly correlates to the cut rating, and we don't recommend changing this percentage if you are unfamiliar with it. Contact us and we would love to help.
Ratio The length to width ratio is a measurement of the length divided by the width, and is useful when buying a fancy-shaped diamond. Diamonds with larger ratios mean that they are longer than they are wide, so they will appear skinny and tall. Diamonds with lower smaller ratios mean that they are not that much taller than they are wide, so they will appear "wide and short". Ratios close to 1.00 mean that the diamond is very symmetric in it's length and width.
Symmetry A rating of how precise the facets of a diamond are aligned. Diamonds with poor symmetry mean that light inside the diamond can get trapped or misdirected, reducing the amount of sparkle. We personally recommend "Very Good" or "Excellent" symmetry ratings.
Polish A rating of how smooth and well a diamond was polished. If diamonds were polished poorly, surface defects can occur on the diamond. We personally recommend "Very Good" or "Excellent" polish ratings.
Fluorescence Fluorescence refers to a diamonds tendency to emit a soft glow (typically blue) when subjected to UV light. For the overwhelming majority of diamonds, the strength of fluorescence has no noticeable effect on appearance. A very small percentage of diamonds exhibit something called milkiness or haziness, which is very undesirable, however our search engine has already removed diamonds that exhibit any hint of this. Additionally, a gemologist will inspect every diamond post purchase to make sure that any fluorescence is not affecting your diamond negatively in any way, so don't hesitate to purchase a fluorescent diamond.
Certificate All our lab created diamonds are certified by the GCAL or IGI, which are among the most reputable diamond grading laboratories in the world. These diamond certificates provide an expert opinion on the quality of the diamond, including characteristics such as cut, color, and clarity.
