Do Amore: The Shark Tank Engagement Ring Jeweler

This is Krish Himmatramka, the founder of Do Amore, as featured on the March 18, 2022 episode of Shark Tank! From the moment I created Do Amore, the world’s first social impact jeweler, I knew it would be a great fit for this show. I applied four times before I was finally chosen – every time, getting further and further. The application process is super competitive as they receive almost 20,000 applications a season, and only 88 companies air on TV. It was a tiresome and long process, probably the same amount of work as 5-10 college applications. But, I just kept trying because I knew we had a story to tell, and that the Sharks would love it.

Why I knew We Were a Fit for Shark Tank

There are three reasons I knew we would be a great fit and why I kept applying:

Sharks love products created out of a personal need

And, I founded Do Amore out a need of my own! I wanted to propose with a ring that didn’t just not hurt the world, but actually helped it. In fact, I was Do Amore’s first customer!

I had great numbers

When I started Do Amore, I invested $18,000 (every penny to my name at the time). And prior to Shark Tank, I hadn’t put in or raised a single dollar more. All of our growth had come from that initial investment alone, because we grew the company profitably from the very start.

We are changing the world

You see, every Do Amore ring gives a person access to clean water. This way, a couple changes another life forever on their special day. Giving someone in need a consistent source of clean water changes their life in the most significant way possible. And at the time of this writing, we have given 14,438 people access to a clean water source, changing 14,438 people’s lives forever.

So, I kept applying and didn’t give up. And fortunately, it paid off!

What the Sharks Said

In real life, I was out talking with the Sharks for about 50 minutes. But, for TV, they had to cut that down to about 10. Here were the main things that stood out to me, from each Shark:

Mark Cuban

Mark felt that I’ve done a great job, but that other companies could add “social impact” to their offerings and compete aggressively. My rebuttal to this was that, sure, they could, but they’ve had decades and haven’t. And, that consumers are smart enough to see the difference between authenticity and a marketing ploy. Also, I mentioned that if other established companies really did add true, meaningful social impact – that would be a good thing for the world. That’s not a bad thing! Furthermore, if long established jewelers changed to our model, then that would mean Do Amore was doing superbly well! See why CNBC said Mark Cuban rejected Do Amore here.

Barbara Corcoran

Barbara said “it is amazing what you have built with nothing” but overall, was not into Do Amore. She said her first husband gave her skis instead of an engagement ring. Were you ask shocked as I was?! And then she confided that her second husband gave her a Volkswagen Bug instead of a diamond. So, she just wasn’t the right fit, and went out.

Kevin O’Leary

Kevin, Mr. Wonderful, asked good questions and was into Do Amore. He even offered us a deal! But, the deal he offered (a royalty based deal) seemed like a terrible one for Do Amore. It felt like it would mean passing this “royalty” onto customers. We want our rings to be competitively priced, and extra royalty felt like the opposite of this. However, I kept engaging, trying to understand his position more, and negotiate with him. I was also hoping to get other Sharks to jump back in, by giving them more insight, and telling more of my story, as I negotiated with Kevin.

Lori Grenier

Lori said that she likes Do Amore a lot, and asked a lot of questions about our clean water projects. After learning more, however, she thought that Kevin would be a better partner. This was because she thought he understood the wedding industry better, having another business in it. So, she decided to end negotiations and suggested finding a way to partner with Kevin since he knew the industry.

Daniel Lubetzky

Daniel said “I think you are a very impressive business person and that you are pursuing something from you heart, but this isn’t my world…” When Daniel said “but,” I knew he was going out, and my heart dropped a bit. He had been my number one target, because he is basically the first entrepreneur that brought social impact into business (even in his businesses before KIND Bars). In the episode, you can even hear me tell him “Thank you, I’m a huge fan” right after he exits. But you’ll just have to keep reading to hear what happened later with Daniel.

The Shark Tank Engagement Ring Deal

After all my negotiating with Kevin, and back and forth hoping another Shark would jump back in, it worked! Daniel Lubetzky came back in and said he would do the deal with me at 15% equity (instead of 6% like I offered). It was obviously a massive devaluation, but I knew I wanted to make this work. Daniel actually got out of his chair and even got on one knee with the Do Amore ring that was on his table, to do the deal!

I kept trying to negotiate with Daniel, and asked him to do 12%. At this point, Daniel told me he wants to do 15% still, but that he would only keep 12% and 3% would go towards my clean water cause. I actually missed when he said this the first time (you can’t tell on TV, but you have multiple Sharks talking to you at once and it’s actually pretty confusing! On TV, they choose which Shark’s audio to use, but up there you really have 2-3 Sharks talking to you at once)!

Daniel told me again that 3% of the equity will be straight towards my cause, and when I heard this, I was really appreciative. I told him “that’s very nice, thank you” and after doing some calculations in my head, and as the other Sharks started to become very impatient, I took the deal!

What it Was Like on Shark Tank

Being on Shark Tank was incredible, and one of the most memorable days of my life. Everyone I met was so nice, and it was very surreal. I filmed the first day so I was expecting things to be very chaotic, and while there was some chaos, overall everything was so well organized.

It’s hard to say much here besides the fact that being on Shark Tank was surreal.

Behind the Scenes on Shark Tank

The first thing I did after arriving to Sony studio to film was go to my trailer and get comfortable. A few minutes later, the producers gave us a tour of the studio. This was super cool, and also the first time that I saw the stage where I would be pitching. In this Instagram video from Shark Tank, you can see me at the very end during the tour in my white shirt and burgundy pants!

Then, I went back to my trailer. While other companies are pitching, you wait in your trailer and just relax (or prepare). I was supposed to be right before lunch. However, lunch time rolled around and they didn’t call me. Around 3 pm, I decided to eat my lunch (I was waiting because I didn’t want to risk getting marinara sauce on my shirt!). Finally, at 4:45 pm, I was called to hair and make up for final touches and taken to the studio to pitch.

After you pitch, if you get a deal, you have to wait in your trailer for a Shark’s representative to meet you. I waited about 45 minutes then was met by one of Daniel’s representatives. She was super nice, and we talked about the process that would happen over the coming months.

Next, I got packed up, and one of the shuttles took me to my hotel. What a day! It was about 15 hours door to door, so not the worst, but not short either!

How Did Do Amore do After Shark Tank

Since Shark Tank, Do Amore has grown and expanded! And, we keep focusing on everything we can to make sure we are the “no brainer” option when it comes to which store choose. Do Amore wants customers to have the best customer service experience ever when they come to Do Amore. We want them to have a product that is made from the cleanest of supply chains. And we want them to make such a big impact, that it changes a life forever. I believe we are accomplishing that right now! But, we continue to strive to make it even better.

Tech note: Despite being on Google Cloud’s most premium server, on the day of Shark Tank airing, the massive interest in Do Amore crashed our site within minutes! That’s the power of Shark Tank! While we were sorry not everyone could see the site, as we wanted to put our best foot forward, it was also a humbling problem to have!
