Remember that first week, when your engagement ring was always sparkling and dazzling? Unfortunately, many times that first week is the last time many rings look that beautiful. But it doesn’t need to be like this. Here are the top 5 ways to clean your engagement ring, and make it sparkle like new:

5 Ways to Clean Your Engagement Ring:

1) Clean Your Engagement Ring at home with a Steam Cleaner

It is relatively inexpensive to purchase a steam cleaner for your home. I have used this one from Amazon, and it works really well! Steam cleaners use high pressure steam, to remove grime, oil, dirt, and more from your engagement ring. Also, the great thing about steam is that it takes less than 10 seconds to actually clean the item, and all you need is water (no purchasing solutions, etc.)! Be cautious when using this item since hot steam, and high pressure, can be dangerous if you aren’t careful.

Clean Your Engagement Ring with an Ultrasonic Cleaner

You could opt for an at-home ultrasonic cleaner like this one, that I also have from Amazon. It works really well, and although it takes more time and patience, it can do just as great a job as steam. While I don’t like that you need to purchase a solution for the best cleaning, it is still less expensive than a steam cleaner. I also use the machine to clean my glasses from time to time!

Ultrasonic Cleaners are less expensive, and do a good job.

3) A Drop of Soap, and a Bowl of Warm Water

Although this won’t compare to the above two options, it will still clean your ring in the most inexpensive way possible. Just take a small bowl, fill it with hot water, mix in 1-2 drops of dishwashing soap, and place the ring in the bowl for 5 minutes. When done, switch the soapy water with a bowl of plain hot water and rinse the ring in the bowl for 10-15 seconds (DO NOT JUST RINSE THE RING UNDER HOT WATER BECAUSE THE SOAP WILL HAVE MADE THE RING SLIPPERY, INCREASING THE CHANCE THAT IT FALLS INTO THE SINK). To avoid water spots, dry the ring off with 2-3 spurts of compressed air, or a soft towel.

4) A Professional can make your ring look like new

A professional jeweler has both the above tools, and more, to restore your ring to like-new condition. If you don’t want to make the investment in the above two options, take it to a professional and ask them to clean it for you.

5) Don’t clean your ring every day

The last thing you want to do is clean your ring every day. While cleaning your ring makes it look beautiful, and sparkly, steam and ultrasonic cleaners used every day can cause unnecessary wear on your ring and make side stones loose. We recommend cleaning your ring every two to ten weeks. If you are having a professional clean your ring every time, then not more than once every  6 weeks (professional steam cleaners are more powerful and therefore exert more force on the ring).
