What is a ring for engagement?

A ring for engagement, also known as an engagement ring, is a piece of jewelry symbolizing your intention to get married. In America, it is customary for women to be presented a ring set with a gem during a marriage proposal! There are many types of rings, ranging from simple solitaires to fancy multi-stone rings. While the most popular center stone choice is diamond, other options include moissanite, sapphire, and emerald.

Engagement ring vs wedding band

An engagement ring is given when you propose marriage, whereas a wedding ring is given at the time of your actual wedding. So, it is traditional for women to wear two rings. While it is non-traditional for men to wear or receive engagement gifts, it is a growing trend. I gave my husband a ring! He now wears either his wedding or engagement ring, depending upon his mood. Traditionally, women stack their engagement and wedding band together on their left hand.

Top 3 Thing to Know

1. What is your partner’s priority for a ring?

Your partner’s priorities with a ring may range from stone size, to stone quality, to ring setting style. In other words, she may prefer a simpler setting if it gets her a big center stone. Or, she may prefer to make sure her center stone is a specific color or clarity, instead of it being larger. Finally, we also have couples who don’t care much about the center stone at all, as long as the setting is exactly right. So, make sure to key in on what your partner is really wanting out of her ring.

Tip: Check out your partner’s Pinterest or Instagram account to see if she’s pinning or following any ring styles or fashion brands.

2. Does your partner prefer a traditional or non-traditional ring for engagement?

There are several styles of rings to choose from. Some brides love the classic look of a solitaire (one stone) or Bostonian three-stone diamond ring. Other women prefer a more artsy style or a colored gemstone ring. So, when thinking about the perfect ring for your partner, consider her style. Does she prefer more classic clothing? If so, she is likely to want something more traditional with respect to her ring. On the other hand, if she is more artistic or high fashion, she may prefer something more stylized.

Tip: If you really don’t know what to get, you cannot go wrong with a classic solitaire like our Asha! Solitaires are great because they can dressed up with a fancy band!

3. What are your expectations on price?

Engagement rings can be ultra affordable (ours begin at $719!), ultra lux (our most luxurious to date have been in the hundreds of thousands), or anywhere in between. There is no right or wrong answer! So, before setting off to search for the perfect ring for your engagement, determine what you feel comfortable spending. That way you can build the perfect ring at the perfect price!

How much should a ring cost for engagement?

Whatever feels right to you. Most modern couples disagree with the old saying that a ring should cost “two months’ salary.” Instead, most of our couples set their own budget, depending upon what their priorities are and what else is going on in their lives. Do Amore works with all budgets. And, since we’re not on commission, we’ll never attempt to “upsell” you. We want you to be happy with your ring and your value!

Diamond ring engagement styles

Diamond ring styles include solitaire, three stone, accented, vintage, and fancy. Solitaire rings have one center stone on a simple band. Three stone rings have three stones (these are also sometimes referred to as “past, present, and future” or “Bostonian” rings)! Accented diamond rings have small diamond sides stones which accent the band. Vintage styles are usually engraved and look like they are from a past era! Finally, fancy settings often encompass large, flashy settings with lots of side stones and flair.

Gemstone ring engagement styles

Gemstone rings are a wonderful non-traditional choice with a pop of color! Basically, any ring that has a colored stone as a center, instead of a diamond, is considered a gemstone engagement ring. And, there are certain gemstones which make better center stones than others. Specifically, sapphire, ruby, emerald, spinel, alexandrite, and topaz all make great center stones, because they are durable enough for daily wear. Other gems, like amethyst, citrine, and moonstone are prone to scratching and breakage. Learn more about gemstone engagement rings here!
