Cut

cut quality is the only thing that contributes to sparkle

Color and clarity do not impact the sparkle of a diamond – so the most important C is Cut. Please see our cut recommendations below:

If searching for a lab-created diamond, only purchase:

  • Signature Ideal and Excellent cut grades if searching for fancy-cut diamonds (fancy-cut is a way of saying any shape besides round-cut)
  • Only Signature Ideal cut grades if searching for round-cut diamonds (please note, GIA certified lab diamonds will not go past Excellent in our search engine since their cut scale is different; a GIA certified Excellent diamond is equivalent to a Signature Ideal cut diamond graded by another lab).

If searching for a natural diamond, only purchase:

  • Excellent cut grades

Color

our color suggestion will be based on if you're going for lab-created or natural

Diamond color is graded based on the bottom of a diamond, not the top, and the face-up of a diamond is almost always about a shade whiter than the underside. For this reason, if going with a natural diamond, we strongly suggest opting for a G-color diamond instead a DEF color diamond, because a G-color diamond will face up white and you save a lot of money.

However, if opting for a lab-diamond, the savings will not be as significant so we suggest you opt for a E, F, or G-color in lab.

Please note, if selecting yellow gold for your setting, then you could take your color grade down 1-2 levels from our suggestions above, since even a slightly “warmer” diamond is going to look white when placed against yellow gold (which is much warmer)!

Clarity

Select VS over VVS

Unless you are opting for an emerald-cut or asscher-cut diamond, select VS1 or VS2 clarity over VVS1 and VVS2. This will help save a lot of money, especially in natural diamonds.

In lab diamonds, you should open your search up to VVS2 in case you find a stone that is close to the same price as a VS stone, but you do not need a VVS stone and we only suggest it if you fall in love with the diamond and it is not too much more expensive.

Measurements Matter

If you can't decide between two diamonds, compare the measurements

Carat weight, as the name suggests, is how much a diamond weighs. However, the actual measurements of the diamond determines how large it is actually going to look. For example, you may see one 2.0 carat diamond that measures 8.08-8.11 mm, and another 2.0 carat diamond that measures 7.97-8.01 mm. If you love both diamonds equally, than the first is going to look a hair larger and is the one you should go with.

Consider Fluorescence

if selecting a natural diamond, fluorescence will help with pricing

Fluorescence can get a bad rap, but Do Amore screens every stone we sell – each and every strong or very strong fluorescent stone we list has no haze, and can even help lower colored stones! See how you can make fluorescence work for you here.

This is only applicable to natural diamonds as all lab-created diamonds will not have fluorescence.
