Diamond Fluorescence: 2 Steps to Make it WORK FOR YOU
You understand the 4 Cs and feel ready to choose a diamond, but the grading report lists strong blue fluorescence. What does that mean for the stone’s appearance and value? Fluorescence can seem confusing because the right level depends on the diamond’s color and how it looks in different lighting. This guide explains how to evaluate it with confidence.
Use this two-step process from Do Amore’s gemologist to choose a fluorescence level that looks good and offers strong value.
What Is Diamond Fluorescence?
Diamond fluorescence is the glow some diamonds emit under ultraviolet light, including sunlight and black light. The GIA grades fluorescence from none to very strong based on the intensity of that glow. A diamond graded none does not show fluorescence, while a diamond graded very strong produces a much more noticeable reaction under UV light.
Can You See Diamond Fluorescence?
Sometimes. Strong or very strong fluorescence may be visible in intense sunlight or under black light. Faint and medium fluorescence are often difficult to notice without controlled lighting or a trained eye.
Fluorescence vs. No Fluorescence
Diamonds with fluorescence usually look like diamonds without fluorescence in ordinary lighting. The difference becomes more noticeable under UV light, and the appearance can change with the light source. In harsh sunlight, some diamonds with strong or very strong blue fluorescence may take on a cooler or steely blue appearance.
Under black light, diamonds with strong or very strong fluorescence can glow vividly.

What Causes Fluorescence in Diamonds?
Diamond fluorescence comes from trace elements or structural features within the crystal that react to ultraviolet light. According to GIA fluorescence research, roughly 25% to 35% of the diamonds it examined showed some degree of fluorescence under UV light.
What Colors Can Diamonds Fluoresce?
Blue is the most common fluorescence color in diamonds, but yellow, white, orange, green, pink, and red reactions can also occur. The effect is usually easiest to notice in strong UV conditions, such as bright sunlight or black light.
The Hope Diamond is a famous exception: it shows a red phosphorescent afterglow after exposure to UV light.

Is Fluorescence in a Diamond Good?
Fluorescence is neither automatically good nor bad. It can be a useful tool when balancing appearance and price, and some buyers enjoy the glow as a unique feature. Others prefer a diamond graded none because they want the most neutral appearance possible. The right choice comes down to the individual stone and your preference.
What Is the Best Fluorescence in a Diamond?
Fluorescence has a mixed reputation, but it does not need to be a dealbreaker. Use these two steps to find a level that looks good and offers fair value.
Step 1: Check for Haze or Milkiness
Strong fluorescence can contribute to a hazy or milky appearance in a small number of diamonds, but this is not typical of most stones with strong or very strong fluorescence. Because haziness is not stated as a separate grade on a GIA report, ask the jeweler or gemologist to inspect the diamond in person or through clear video.
Not every retailer filters hazy stones from its inventory or trains staff to identify the issue. Ask whether the diamond has been inspected for cloudiness in normal lighting before you buy.
Do Amore’s gemologists screen its available diamonds for unwanted milkiness or haziness before presenting them to customers.
Step 2: Match Fluorescence to the Color Grade
For a white diamond, blue fluorescence or no fluorescence are the most common choices. The preferred intensity depends on the color grade and the look you want.
Colorless Diamonds: D, E, or F
Choose none or faint fluorescence for the most neutral, icy-white appearance. Medium fluorescence can also look beautiful. Strong or very strong fluorescence may suit someone who enjoys a visible blue glow under UV light.
Near-Colorless Diamonds: G or H
Medium or strong blue fluorescence can offer good value in G or H diamonds. Inspect the stone in several lighting conditions to make sure you like the appearance.
Warm Diamonds: I, J, or Lower
Strong or very strong blue fluorescence may make some warmer diamonds appear brighter in UV-rich lighting and can lower the price. It will not turn an I or J diamond into a colorless stone, so judge the diamond by how it looks in everyday light.
Colored Diamonds
Fluorescence can affect colored diamonds differently depending on the body color and the fluorescence color. Ask a gemologist to inspect the stone for unwanted haze or an oily appearance rather than choosing from the grading report alone.

Does Fluorescence Affect Diamond Value?
A diamond with fluorescence may cost less than a comparable stone graded none, particularly in higher color grades. That can create an opportunity to prioritize cut, carat, color, or clarity while staying within budget.
Price differences vary by color grade, fluorescence intensity, market demand, and the individual stone. Compare diamonds with similar specifications and inspect the actual appearance instead of assuming fluorescence always creates the same discount.

Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Have Fluorescence?
Many lab-grown diamonds are graded none for fluorescence, but fluorescence can occur. The pattern may differ from natural diamonds because growth methods and trace elements vary. Check the grading report and judge the stone in more than one lighting condition.
Should You Buy a Diamond With Fluorescence?
A diamond with fluorescence can be a smart choice if you like its appearance and it helps you get the cut, color, clarity, or carat weight you want within budget.
The decision is personal. Compare the stone in normal indoor light, daylight, and UV-rich light when possible. Cut quality should remain a priority, and a gemologist should check any diamond with strong fluorescence for haze or milkiness.
Potential Benefits
- May cost less than a comparable diamond graded none
- Can add unique character under UV light
- Blue fluorescence may make some near-colorless diamonds appear brighter in certain lighting
Potential Drawbacks
- A small number of stones may appear hazy or milky
- Some buyers prefer diamonds with no fluorescence
- Resale preferences and pricing can vary
