Do Amore: The ONLY Shark Tank Engagement Ring Jeweler

Did you know that Do Amore was featured on Shark Tank? Or that we’re the only engagement ring jeweler to ever be on the show? Cool huh? Find out why we were chosen to be the only Shark Tank engagement ring jeweler, more about our episode and deal, some behind the scenes info, and what’s happened since here!

Do Amore: The Shark Tank Engagement Ring Jeweler

This is Krish Himmatramka, the founder of Do Amore, as featured on the March 18, 2022 episode of Shark Tank! From the moment I created Do Amore, the world’s first social impact jeweler, I knew it would be a great fit for this show. I applied four times before I was finally chosen – every time, getting further and further. The application process is super competitive as they receive almost 20,000 applications a season, and only 88 companies air on TV. It was a tiresome and long process, probably the same amount of work as 5-10 college applications. But, I just kept trying because I knew we had a story to tell, and that the Sharks would love it.

Shark Tank Engagement Ring Jeweler Do Amore Founder Krish Himmatramka

Why I knew We Were a Fit for Shark Tank

There are three reasons I knew we would be a great fit and why I kept applying:

Sharks love products created out of a personal need

And, I founded Do Amore out a need of my own! I wanted to propose with a ring that didn’t just not hurt the world, but actually helped it. In fact, I was Do Amore’s first customer!

I had great numbers

When I started Do Amore, I invested $18,000 (every penny to my name at the time). And prior to Shark Tank, I hadn’t put in or raised a single dollar more. All of our growth had come from that initial investment alone, because we grew the company profitably from the very start.

We are changing the world

You see, every Do Amore ring gives a person access to clean water. This way, a couple changes another life forever on their special day. Giving someone in need a consistent source of clean water changes their life in the most significant way possible. And at the time of this writing, we have given 14,438 people access to a clean water source, changing 14,438 people’s lives forever.

So, I kept applying and didn’t give up. And fortunately, it paid off!

What the Sharks Said

In real life, I was out talking with the Sharks for about 50 minutes. But, for TV, they had to cut that down to about 10. Here were the main things that stood out to me, from each Shark:

Mark Cuban

Mark felt that I’ve done a great job, but that other companies could add “social impact” to their offerings and compete aggressively. My rebuttal to this was that, sure, they could, but they’ve had decades and haven’t. And, that consumers are smart enough to see the difference between authenticity and a marketing ploy. Also, I mentioned that if other established companies really did add true, meaningful social impact – that would be a good thing for the world. That’s not a bad thing! Furthermore, if long established jewelers changed to our model, then that would mean Do Amore was doing superbly well! See why CNBC said Mark Cuban rejected Do Amore here.

Barbara Corcoran

Barbara said “it is amazing what you have built with nothing” but overall, was not into Do Amore. She said her first husband gave her skis instead of an engagement ring. Were you ask shocked as I was?! And then she confided that her second husband gave her a Volkswagen Bug instead of a diamond. So, she just wasn’t the right fit, and went out.

Kevin O’Leary

Kevin, Mr. Wonderful, asked good questions and was into Do Amore. He even offered us a deal! But, the deal he offered (a royalty based deal) seemed like a terrible one for Do Amore. It felt like it would mean passing this “royalty” onto customers. We want our rings to be competitively priced, and extra royalty felt like the opposite of this. However, I kept engaging, trying to understand his position more, and negotiate with him. I was also hoping to get other Sharks to jump back in, by giving them more insight, and telling more of my story, as I negotiated with Kevin.

Lori Grenier

Lori said that she likes Do Amore a lot, and asked a lot of questions about our clean water projects. After learning more, however, she thought that Kevin would be a better partner. This was because she thought he understood the wedding industry better, having another business in it. So, she decided to end negotiations and suggested finding a way to partner with Kevin since he knew the industry.

Daniel Lubetzky

Daniel said “I think you are a very impressive business person and that you are pursuing something from you heart, but this isn’t my world…” When Daniel said “but,” I knew he was going out, and my heart dropped a bit. He had been my number one target, because he is basically the first entrepreneur that brought social impact into business (even in his businesses before KIND Bars). In the episode, you can even hear me tell him “Thank you, I’m a huge fan” right after he exits. But you’ll just have to keep reading to hear what happened later with Daniel.

The Shark Tank Engagement Ring Deal

After all my negotiating with Kevin, and back and forth hoping another Shark would jump back in, it worked! Daniel Lubetzky came back in and said he would do the deal with me at 15% equity (instead of 6% like I offered). It was obviously a massive devaluation, but I knew I wanted to make this work. Daniel actually got out of his chair and even got on one knee with the Do Amore ring that was on his table, to do the deal!

I kept trying to negotiate with Daniel, and asked him to do 12%. At this point, Daniel told me he wants to do 15% still, but that he would only keep 12% and 3% would go towards my clean water cause. I actually missed when he said this the first time (you can’t tell on TV, but you have multiple Sharks talking to you at once and it’s actually pretty confusing! On TV, they choose which Shark’s audio to use, but up there you really have 2-3 Sharks talking to you at once)!

Daniel told me again that 3% of the equity will be straight towards my cause, and when I heard this, I was really appreciative. I told him “that’s very nice, thank you” and after doing some calculations in my head, and as the other Sharks started to become very impatient, I took the deal!

What it Was Like on Shark Tank

Being on Shark Tank was incredible, and one of the most memorable days of my life. Everyone I met was so nice, and it was very surreal. I filmed the first day so I was expecting things to be very chaotic, and while there was some chaos, overall everything was so well organized.

It’s hard to say much here besides the fact that being on Shark Tank was surreal.

Behind the Scenes on Shark Tank

The first thing I did after arriving to Sony studio to film was go to my trailer and get comfortable. A few minutes later, the producers gave us a tour of the studio. This was super cool, and also the first time that I saw the stage where I would be pitching. In this Instagram video from Shark Tank, you can see me at the very end during the tour in my white shirt and burgundy pants!

Then, I went back to my trailer. While other companies are pitching, you wait in your trailer and just relax (or prepare). I was supposed to be right before lunch. However, lunch time rolled around and they didn’t call me. Around 3 pm, I decided to eat my lunch (I was waiting because I didn’t want to risk getting marinara sauce on my shirt!). Finally, at 4:45 pm, I was called to hair and make up for final touches and taken to the studio to pitch.

After you pitch, if you get a deal, you have to wait in your trailer for a Shark’s representative to meet you. I waited about 45 minutes then was met by one of Daniel’s representatives. She was super nice, and we talked about the process that would happen over the coming months.

Next, I got packed up, and one of the shuttles took me to my hotel. What a day! It was about 15 hours door to door, so not the worst, but not short either!

How Did Do Amore do After Shark Tank

Since Shark Tank, Do Amore has grown and expanded! And, we keep focusing on everything we can to make sure we are the “no brainer” option when it comes to which store choose. Do Amore wants customers to have the best customer service experience ever when they come to Do Amore. We want them to have a product that is made from the cleanest of supply chains. And we want them to make such a big impact, that it changes a life forever. I believe we are accomplishing that right now! But, we continue to strive to make it even better.

Tech note: Despite being on Google Cloud’s most premium server, on the day of Shark Tank airing, the massive interest in Do Amore crashed our site within minutes! That’s the power of Shark Tank! While we were sorry not everyone could see the site, as we wanted to put our best foot forward, it was also a humbling problem to have!

Zodiac Ring Engagement: What Your Sign Says

Is your love written in the stars? Does your fiancee love reading her horoscope? Then a zodiac ring for your engagement may be the perfect choice! Each star sign has its own set of tendencies and driving forces.  They also each have their own zodiac stone! So, couples that love the stars have lots of options. Read on to hear more about what your star sign will love in a personalized engagement ring!

What are zodiac signs?

Zodiac signs are based off of a set of constellations that appear along Earth’s yearly orbit around the sun, as originally found by the Ancient Greeks. There are twelve of these star signs, each dedicated to a specific time period of the year. And, your star sign coordinates with your birthday! Each zodiac sign is aligned with an element: earth, fire, water, air. According to astrology, your star sign impacts how you view the world, and even your future!

Geek note: The dates associated with each zodiac sign were set by the Ancient Babylonians. The dates when the sun shows through each constellation has changed a bit over the years. There’s even a controversial 13th constellation, Ophiuchus. However, astrologists maintain that the original signs and dates set by the Babylonians are more relevant to astrological forecasting.

How can star signs help me choose an engagement ring?

Each star sign is associated with personality traits, which can help you decide what your priorities are when selecting an engagement ring! For example, Aries are competitive, so when choosing zodiac ring engagement: go big! On the other hand, Cancers are sentimental, so you’ll want to dial in on personal touches. Your partner’s zodiac sign can also lend some clues to how to propose. A star sign’s element can give great direction here (more on that below).

Zodiac Ring Engagement Styles

Aries

Aries, our first fire sign, is super competitive. Known to be a little hotheaded, Aries like to be right, and like to be #1. So, focus on going big and showy. A large center stone in a high end Luna or a flashy Mekelle would fit the bill! Check out our blog on getting the most bang for your buck in a nice big solitaire here!

Looking for your Aries Zodiac stone? It’s Bloodstone! Bloodstone is a bit soft for a gemstone engagement ring, but you can reap its power by choosing a speckled diamond or sapphire. Email us here if you’re looking for a bloodstone colored engagement ring for your Aries!

Perfect Aries zodiac ring: a large round stone in Mekelle setting

Big flashy round in a Mekelle setting

Taurus

Taurus are happy, practical people. They prioritize comfort, so look for something easy to wear and that sits flush with a wedding band. Our Mae is a great choice for a classic look, and for those seeking a little more sparkle, our Aspen’s floral gallery means it’s strong and less likely to catch. Choose a Round or Oval for maximum comfort.

Looking for your Taurus Zodiac stone? It’s Sapphire! Sapphire engagement rings are traditional and gorgeous. Check out our sapphire options here, and email us here if you’re looking for a custom curated sapphire engagement ring selection for your Taurus!

Gemini

The twins, Gemini, are witty social butterflies. Give them something to talk about! A toi et moi style custom engagement ring would be the perfect fit. Or, for a more classic style, give her a pair of pears to show off along side a stunning center in our Maya. Geminis like variation, so avoid a classic Round center.

Looking for your Gemini Zodiac stone? It’s Agate! Agate is a bit soft for a gemstone engagement ring, but you can capitalize on its power by choosing a watercolor diamond or star sapphire. Email us here if you’re looking for an agate colored engagement ring for your Gemini!

Cancer

Our first water sign, Cancer, is sensitive and likes to know you put in thought. Check out vintage styles like Katherine or Sophie, to appeal to her sense of nostalgia. And, add a custom engraving like your song or nicknames for the special touch she craves. Make sure to look at her Pinterest pages so you can see any additional details she wants.

Looking for your Cancer Zodiac stone? It’s Emerald! Emerald makes a great engagement ring choice, as it’s durable, rare, and beautiful. Email us here if you’re looking for an emerald engagement ring for your Cancer!

Leo

Leos are bold and confident. They have great swagger and love to rock a big look. Halos are the perfect way to let them show off that sense of pride! A lovely Elle or or Abila would make your lioness happy! Any shape goes, just make sure it’s flashy.

Looking for your Leo Zodiac stone? It’s Onyx! Onyx is a dramatic black color, however, it is a bit soft for daily wear. You can take advantage of your onyx power through choosing a black diamond engagement ring that will last through the ages! Email us here if you’re looking for an onyx colored engagement ring for your Leo!

Virgo

Virgos are super logical, so go with a classic that matches everything. Learn how to get the best traditional round diamond here, or opt for a classic cushion. And then set it in an Asha, the original engagement setting. Bonus points for platinum, the most durable metal.

Looking for your Virgo Zodiac stone? It’s Carnelian! Carnelian is a bit soft for a great gemstone engagement ring, but you can capitalize on this astrological power by choosing a watercolor diamond or star sapphire. Email us here if you’re looking for a carnelian colored engagement ring for your Virgo!

Libra

Libras like balance and everything to be in its place. So, choose a ring that reflects their sense of inner calm. A three-stone like Everly or the Tapered Baguette would be the perfect zodiac ring. Choose a shape that is symmetrical and orderly – so pears and hearts are out, as are “crushed ice” cushions and radiants. Stick to a round, oval, princess, or emerald cut.

Looking for your Libra Zodiac stone? It’s Peridot! Peridot, unfortunately, is not a great gemstone engagement ring, because it’s a bit too soft for daily wear. However, we have gorgeous peridot-colored lime green diamonds that will let you take advantage of this power, while remaining durable! Email us here if you’re looking for a peridot colored engagement ring for your Libra!

Traditional Radiant in Everly

Scorpio

Ooh so mysterious. Scorpio is a riddle wrapped in a conundrum. They are passionate and intense. Pack on the hidden details with this water sign. Great choices include Hidden Halo and Jolie! Bonus points for including a hidden engraving or gem embedded inside the band. Go for maximum fire in your diamond cut – choose a stone with a small table and a high crown. Other hidden flair your Scorpio may like include blue nuance or extra contrast.

Looking for your Scorpio Zodiac stone? It’s Aquamarine! Aquamarine can be a good choice for a gemstone engagement ring, if you choose a dark toned stone. Read more about how to pick a good Aqua here, and email us here if you’re looking for an aquamarine engagement ring for your Scorpio!

Sagittarius

The ever moving archer! Sagittarius is boisterous and loves adventure. Make sure to choose a shape that won’t catch on things while they’re moving a mile a minute. Rounds and ovals are your friend, avoid stones with sharp corners like princess, marquise, or pear. Check out protected settings like Rosie or Callan so your archer can continue their active lifestyle.

Looking for your Sagittarius Zodiac stone? It’s Topaz! Topaz is a beautiful choice for a gemstone engagement ring as it’s fairly durable and comes in a lot of different colors! Email us here if you’re looking for a topaz engagement ring for your Sagittarius!

Capricorn

Capricorns are mature and classic, and have been since birth. Go for refined styles like our Tapered Baguette or Talia. Elegant shapes like emerald and a classic round are good choices – they are timeless just like your Cap. Stay away from shapes and metals that tend to go through phases, like rose gold, princess cut, and marquise cut.

Looking for your Capricorn Zodiac stone? It’s Ruby! Ruby is an excellent choice for a gemstone engagement ring as it’s super durable and gorgeous! Check out our ruby selection here, or email us for a custom curated ruby engagement ring selection!

Aquarius

Your Aquarius is in her head 24/7. Conceptual, and ever philosophizing, choose a ring that symbolizes your love. Our Unity or Infinity are great choices, and she’ll love hearing about her ring’s meaning during your proposal. Aquarius will most appreciate a blockchain natural diamond or a carbon neutral lab diamond, as she’ll want to know you put the effort in to be ethical.

Looking for your Aquarius Zodiac stone? It’s Garnet! Garnet is a good choice for a gemstone engagement ring as it’s fairly durable and comes in a lot of different colors! Email us here if you’re looking for a garnet engagement ring for your Aquarius!

Pisces

Our final water sign, Pisces is highly emotional, and caught up in a dream. Choose a setting that blends their fantasy with a dose of reality to keep them grounded. The Floating Ring or Patronus bypass designs are great picks. Customize the Floating Ring by emailing us here, as you’ll want to pick a shape other than round (your Pisces wants something out of the ordinary).

Looking for your Pisces Zodiac stone? It’s Amethyst! Amethyst is unfortunately not a great choice for an engagement ring, as it’s a bit too soft and will scratch/chip. However! Amethyst colored topaz and purple sapphire can help you tap into this power, while remaining durable for daily wear! Email us here if you’re looking for an amethyst colored engagement ring for your Pisces!

A Zodiac Ring Engagement: Element Proposals

Your partner’s astrological element can also help you plan your engagement. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) are social and intellectual: make it meaningful and include others. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) are passionate and spontaneous: make it dramatic, when the time is right. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are sensitive and perceptive: make sure to pay attention to the details and what your partner has been hinting at. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) are practical and physical: good food and wine will go a long way!

Your Ethical Jeweler: How Do Amore Makes an Impact

With the rise of social responsibility and corporate transparency, most couples today want an ethical jeweler for their special moments. But what makes one jeweler more ethical than another? Well, it turns out that there are lots of ways that a jeweler can make an ethical impact on the world. Read more to see how Do Amore maximizes its social and environmental impact with every purchase.

TLDR: Ethical sourcing, conflict free diamonds, recycled gold, sustainable lab created diamonds and gemstones, carbon neutral shipping, sustainable boxes. PLUS! Every purchase helps to build a well in a developing country.

Ethical Sourcing

Many jewelers claim to use ethical practices in their sourcing, however one reason our founder created Do Amore was because he found holes in many of the practices. Making truly ethical jewelry means making eco-friendly, pro human-rights choices across the board. This means using ethical diamonds and gems, from mines that adhere to human rights best practices, setting them in recycled gold, shipping in sustainable packages, and making the entire transaction carbon neutral. How does your jeweler accomplish these goals? Here are the steps Do Amore takes:

sustainably sourced natural and lab diamond engagement rings on a hand

Sustainably sourced natural and lab created diamonds

Lab Created Diamonds

Lab created diamonds are a great way to ensure your jewelry is ethical and sustainable. This is because, generally, creating a diamond in a lab uses fewer resources than mining efforts do. And, many diamond growers use carbon neutral, sustainable methods to grow gems! For example, we work with cutters that use plasma, wind, and solar sources to power their factories. And, lab created stones are a fraction of the cost of their natural counterparts! So, it’s a win win.

Conflict-Free Natural Diamonds

If you want a natural diamond, ethical jewelers go above and beyond the Kimberley Process. The Kimberley Process was created in May 2000 as a method for certifying diamonds against funding war or rebels. And, 99.8% percent of the jewelry industry now participates in the Kimberley Process. This means that virtually all natural diamonds sold today are conflict free! And, Do Amore goes beyond the Kimberley Process by refusing to source from areas experiencing conflict, just in case.

Founder’s Note: Our goal is to educate people on the best options for ethical jewelry – oftentimes this means lab created. However, if a customer wants a natural stone, we feel it is our responsibility to find them one that is made in the most ethical manner possible.

Blockchain Enabled Natural Diamonds

One of our favorite ethical options is blockchain enabled natural diamonds. “Blockchain enabled” means that the diamond has a unique ledger that lists every person who has touched it, from mine to you. This type of chain gives ultimate peace of mind and maximum accountability. Plus, you get to see each of the craftsmen who helped find and shape your stone! Blockchain enabled diamond reports are truly unique and fascinating!

Lab Created Gemstones for Ultimate Sustainability

Choosing a lab created gemstone means your gem is super ethical and sustainable. And, our lab created gems are some of the most sustainably grown in the world! Gem scientists are able to grow large crystals over relatively short periods of time, in comparison to natural gems taking hundreds of thousands of years. And lab gems require no mining! As a result, lab grown gemstones are a great commitment to our planet.

Natural Gemstones for the Ethical Jeweler

Do Amore only sources from ethical gemstone cutters and we can source country-specific gems! Our favorite gem cutter is also a Diamond Sightholder, meaning they adhere to the strictest ethical and environmental requirements on the planet. Most of our gems come from artisanal (small scale) miners who live and mine in their own communities. As a result, these miners intimately know how to work their gem deposits using minimally damaging techniques. And, these small scale operations help to support families and local communities.

Sustainable natural blue sapphire from ethical jeweler do amore

Sustainably sourced natural blue sapphire

Recycled Precious Metal

In addition to using the most ethical, sustainable gems and diamonds, we also only use recycled gold, recycled platinum, and recycled palladium in our jewelry. In fact, Do Amore signed the No Dirty Gold commitment its first day. Because of precious metal’s ability to be fully refined, gold and other precious metals are infinitely recyclable! In fact, recycled gold, palladium, and platinum are just as gorgeous and strong when recycled as when first used. Using recycled precious metal just means less impact to the Earth and its people.

Sustainable Boxes

And what about the packaging? Once you have created sustainable, ethical jewelry, make sure not to ruin the impact! All of Do Amore’s jewelry comes in beautiful Jarrah Wood boxes – the most sustainable wood on the planet. Do Amore orders these boxes in large quantity for the smallest shipping impact. And to offset the energy spent during shipment, we purchase carbon credits.

Carbon Credits for the Ethical Jeweler

Speaking of carbon credits! Do Amore purchases carbon credits to offset environmental impact! What is a carbon credit, exactly? Carbon credits are permanent investments in climate action which reduce emissions across the globe. And, projects certified for carbon credits must make an “additional” difference! That means carbon credits fund changes that would otherwise not happen. Projects can include the protection of ecosystems, the restoration of forests, or the reduction of reliance on fossil fuels.

Give Back to Those in Need

Do Amore stands apart as an ethical jeweler for its commitment to not just not hurting the world, but actually helping the world. EVERY Do Amore purchase gives a person in a developing country access to clean water. This way a couple literally changes another life forever on their special day. This is at the heart of our company, and even prove it. After you receive your order, you can look up the physical GPS coordinates and see a photo of the actual water well you helped build, along with information on the community that now has access to clean water, thanks to you. You can check out our impact here.

Proposal Ideas: Top 5 Romantic Proposals of 2021!

A marriage proposal is one of the most romantic moments of a couple’s life. These moments become cherished memories. At Do Amore, we love helping couples create the perfect proposal. In fact, our name even means to give with love! So, if you’re looking for the best proposal ideas, you’ve come to the right people. Read on to answer proposal questions, and read some breathtakingly romantic proposal ideas!

Proposal Ideas: The Basics

What’s the most romantic way to propose?

The most romantic proposals are full of meaning to the couple, so think special memories, places, plans for the future, and even nicknames. To some couples, this means a romantic private dinner where they had their first date. For others, it may mean a surprise gathering with family. And for our extroverted couples, the more public pizazz the better!

engagement ring in velvet ring box with white flowers and sparkling wine bottle

What to say while proposing?

“Will you marry me?” is a tried and true classic, whereas unique proposals incorporate the future you want your partner to create with you. So, do you want to travel the world together, forever? Raise a beautiful family? Be the most beautiful power couple? Be gaming buddies forever? The choices are endless!

Do you have to kneel when proposing?

Only if you want to! Kneeling to propose comes from the days of chivalry and knighthood, where a knight would show respect to a lady by lowering himself beneath her. Some modern couples love this romance and tradition. Other couples love a unique spin: you can propose sitting to dinner, laying in bed watching a movie, or jumping out of a plane! Whatever interaction with your partner feels most authentic should guide you.

What is a unique way to propose a guy?

We asked around, and almost every guy we asked wanted an intimate proposal while out in nature! So, if you’re looking to propose to your guy, think scenic vistas. Mountaintops, lakes, or on a hike. Most guys asked said they’d prefer it to be a moment just between you two, instead of in a crowd. So, pack a picnic, cozy up, and think romance!

What is the average time to propose?

The average couple is together around 18 months prior to proposal. But, love has not boundaries! If it feels right much sooner, go for it! Likewise, if you want more time, listen to that too. Also, if the proposal is not so much of a surprise, couples can plan their proposal to coordinate with special dates, family visiting, or other scheduling priorities.

Top 5 Proposal Ideas of 2021!

We’ve asked around – and here are the most romantic proposals of 2021! And, we’ll be asking some of our awesome Instagram followers to chime in too. Here are the top 5 most desired proposal ideas!

#1 Proposal Idea: Memory Lane

Our sentimental customers wanted to propose where they first met or first said I love you! This idea is chock full of emotion and nostalgia. Remember when you had that first spark? That look in her eyes? Remake the occasion! Tell stories, make inside jokes, and think about what songs were popular that year. If you really want to get into “character”, how old were you? What was the Pantone color of the year? Were you in different jobs? The sky’s the limit and you can be as romantic or silly as you want. And, you can get others in on it too. Restaurants, hotels, stores, and even university admin love getting in on these beautiful moments. I mean, seriously, how often do you get to help in such a huge surprise? Ask people to take photos and show us!

Proposal Idea #2: Destination Proposals

Unsurprisingly, a destination proposal is high up on many of our customer’s lists. Who doesn’t want a romantic getaway?! Think “backdrop” – what is going to look great in your memories and pictures? Is there a city you’ve always wanted to go to? A beautiful lake? The beach! The mountains! The options are endless. Just remember to take the ring as a carry-on and not in your luggage.

#3 Proposal Idea: Furry Friends

Does your partner love pets? Bring them in on it! We’ve seen so many adorable proposals that include puppies and kittens – it’s a great way to start your new lives together! Tie your ring around your pet’s collar, or have them hold a sign asking your partner to marry you! Active couples could also go on a dog walk to a romantic proposal location. Finally, who could resist a dressed up pup for your perfect proposal?

Proposal Idea #4: Surprise Party

Are y’all the life of the party? Bring your family and friends in on it! Have your friends and family set up a big surprise party while you and your partner are out – or tell your partner you’re going to someone else’s party! Make sure to text on your way, and watch the surprise unfold before you. Bonus points for streamers and candid pictures capturing the moment.

#5 Proposal Idea: Simple & Intimate

Sometimes simple really is the best! A nice dinner, a quiet stroll, a beautiful view – and propose when it feels right. Remember: proposing is not just an Instagram moment, it’s about asking your partner to stand by you through thick and thin. It’s a big moment, and a very personal one! So, a quiet, intimate setting can be exactly the right option for many thoughtful couples.

Engagement Ring FAQ

Can I show engagement ring before proposal?

Sure, if you don’t mind it not being a surprise. Many of our couples choose to design their engagement rings together, and then propose at a surprise time and place. Others choose to design and purchase the ring without their partner’s involvement, so it’s a complete surprise!

Is it possible to propose without a ring?

Yes. We work with plenty of couples who get engaged and then design a ring together! We also have sent some gorgeous loose stones for proposals. This option gives one partner the ability to choose the focal point, and the couple the chance to design the ring together. Check out our gorgeous new loose diamond boxes here!

man holding ring box showing off engagement ring

How do you present a ring when proposing?

Traditionally, your engagement ring is presented in a beautiful box (check out our sustainable Jarrah wood boxes here!). However, we’ve seen some super romantic proposals where rings have been hidden in champagne flutes, geodes, and puppy collars.

Surprise Proposal Ideas

Should a proposal be a surprise?

Most couples want some aspect of their engagement to be a surprise, whether that be the entire proposal or just when it happens. Quietly asking your partner’s friends is often a good way to test those waters. Other ways of finding clues include looking at your partner’s Pinterest pages and asking about their friends’ proposals!

How can I surprise my girlfriend in a proposal?

A surprise engagement is as easy as these four steps:

  1. Find her style through her Pinterest, friends, or other jewelry;
  2. Design a ring to compliment her style (check out classic styles here, or custom design with us!);
  3. Invite her to your proposal location, allegedly for another reason (a friend’s party, a class, or another event); and
  4. Pop the question!

How to NOT Ruin the Surprise

Here are the top 5 biggest mistakes people make when ordering an engagement ring meant to be a surprise:

Shipping Mistakes

Shipping it to the couple’s shared home where the fiancée-to-be finds it. Instead, have us ship to a secure FedEx facility to avoid this!

Social Media Linkage

If you order the ring on a shared device without signing out of social media, Instagram and other socials can mine and publicly ask about purchases. You don’t want Instagram asking your fiancée how their ring is. So, SIGN OUT before purchase to avoid the tip off!

Clear the Cache

Not clearing your computer’s cache can also prompt unwanted advertising links. Clear your cache so Google doesn’t show engagement advertising.

Blabbermouths

Think before telling friends. Telling indiscreet friends/family is a surefire way to spoil the surprise. So, make sure not to tell people who will let it slip to your partner!

Hide it well!

Hiding the ring in too obvious of a hiding place will not get you the discretion you’re after. We suggest tool chests, locked vehicle compartments, a trusted family member’s home, or locked office drawers. Don’t trust your underwear drawer – everyone knows that one!

Can you help me develop a romantic proposal idea?

Emerald Engagement Rings: 6 Shocking Facts

It’s not easy being green. But it can be! Many people hold the mistaken belief that Emeralds are not an engagement ring option due to being too soft. But what if I told you that Emeralds are actually harder than other common gems like Amethyst or Citrine? Read on below to learn 6 shocking facts about Emerald engagement rings, why they’re a great option, and how to pick the best one!

Shocking Fact #1: They’re not actually “too soft”

Do emeralds scratch easily?

No. Contrary to popular belief, Emeralds are actually quite scratch resistant, being a 7.5-8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. This means they are pretty durable for everyday wear! What is actually more important to understand about Emeralds is that many have extensive inclusions. Jewelers call these special Emerald inclusions its “jardin” (or its garden!). Emerald jardin is very normal, as Emeralds are a Type III stone (inclusions expected). Importantly, however, is that some of these inclusions may reach the surface. And, surface-reaching inclusions can make a stone vulnerable to chipping. So, by choosing a stone without (or without many) surface-reaching inclusions, your Emerald is not “too soft” to be an engagement ring!

Can emeralds crack?

Yes. Like all stones (yes, even diamonds!) Emeralds can crack or chip if struck. Because many Emeralds have surface-reaching inclusions, cracks can occur more easily. So, when choosing an emerald, make sure to look for a stone with no (or only minor) surface-reaching inclusions. If the stone you’re looking at has a surface-reaching inclusion, make sure to set it in a protective setting, such as a bezel or halo!

Shocking Fact #2: Emeralds can be eye-clean

Are real emeralds cloudy?

Many are, but not all! Because Emeralds are a Type III stone, we expect them to have inclusions – and often so many that the gem is somewhat cloudy. However, super high-quality natural Emeralds can be eye-clean! Another way of choosing an eye-clean Emerald is to choose a Lab-Created Emerald. Lab-Created Emeralds have the exact same mineral makeup as a natural Emerald, but will not show a jardin (and are therefore often more durable).

Do emeralds sparkle?

Eye clean Emeralds will offer green flashes, but not “diamond-like” rainbow sparkle. This is because Emerald’s refractive index is 1.566 – 1.600, whereas diamond’s is 2.42. That means that when light enters an Emerald, it does not reflect it as much as a diamond. Instead, light makes an eye-clean Emerald brighten and almost glow.

Shocking Fact #3: High-quality Emeralds are rarer than Diamonds

High-quality eye clean natural Emeralds are rarer than diamonds! It takes moving around 2.5x more rock to locate a high-end Emerald than it does a Diamond. So, you can rest assured that choosing an Emerald engagement ring shows your love.

Shocking Fact #4: Natural stones are oiled for beauty

To make an Emerald’s jardin less noticeable, and it’s green more green, natural Emeralds are oiled after they are faceted. This is a normal treatment and all natural Emeralds are expected to be oiled (just like Sapphires are expected to be heated.) Think about it like a hot oil treatment you put on your hair!

How can I clean my emerald engagement ring?

Because natural Emeralds are oiled, natural Emeralds should be cleaned by hand in warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush, and not with an ultrasonic or steam cleaner (which may strip out the oil). If you accidentally remove the oil from your natural Emerald, don’t panic! A competent jeweler can have your Emerald re-oiled (don’t try this at home, kids).

PS: If you’ve chosen a Lab-Created Emerald, you can clean your Emerald by hand or ultrasonic – no oil to worry about!

Can you wear an emerald ring everyday?

Sure. Because Emeralds are a 7.5-8 on the hardness scale, they are durable enough for everyday wear. Like all fine jewelry (yes, even diamonds), you should remove your rings before doing anything strenuous. So, before you work out, garden, do the dishes, etc., take off your ring! This will help protect it from unnecessary hits.

Shocking Fact #5: Lab Created Emeralds are super affordable

(left) Lab Emerald vs Natural Emerald (right)

Are Emeralds cheaper than diamonds?

Natural top AAA quality Emeralds will be more expensive than diamonds. This is because they are rarer in nature and much more expensive to find! However, if you like the look of an Emerald with more jardin (and there are some cool looking jardins out there), you can definitely find a natural Emerald that is less expensive than diamond. Also, Lab-Created Emeralds are incredibly affordable! And, a Lab-Created Emerald is much less expensive than a Lab Created Diamond.

How much is a 1-carat emerald worth?

A natural top quality 1 carat Emerald will range upwards of $4,500+, however, a Lab-Created 1 carat Emerald is only $880! Check out below how this compares with diamond:

How much is an emerald engagement ring?

The price of your Emerald Engagement ring is simply the cost of your chosen Emerald center stone and your ring setting – we have Emerald engagement rings starting at $930! Couples can choose from large Emerald center stones, beautiful Emerald three-stone engagement rings, or even Emerald halos! We love it all, and can make the Emerald engagement ring of your dreams.

Olivia Wilde's Emerald Engagement Ring

Shocking Fact #6: Emeralds make great engagement rings

Is Emerald OK for an engagement ring?

Yes! Emeralds make great engagement rings: they’re beautiful, rare, and durable! I love Emerald engagement rings because they are unique and said to bring good fortune, too.

Are emerald engagement rings popular?

Although not as popular as Sapphire engagement rings, Emerald engagement rings are popular with those who love green. They enjoy a celebrity following, too! Halle Berry’s engagement ring showcases a gorgeous Emerald cut Emerald, as did Jacqueline Kennedy’s! Victoria Beckham has a beautiful cushion cut Emerald, and Olivia Wilde’s engagement ring has a unique Art Deco Emerald halo.

Who should not wear emerald?

People who do not want to have to remove their jewelry before being active should consider other stones. Those who want an ultra-durable green gem should consider green diamond (we can source natural, color enhanced natural, or lab green diamonds!) or green sapphire. Both of these gems are more durable for extreme wear.

Who is an emerald engagement ring right for?

Those who love a natural green look and who will treat their Emerald with care! Emeralds are a lovely engagement ring choice for lovers of green and gardening. They are best for people who don’t mind removing their jewelry when being active.

How to Pick the Best Emerald Engagement Ring

Should I pick a Natural or Lab Emerald?

It depends on why you want an Emerald! Couples choose Natural Emeralds for their rarity, prestige, and natural beauty. Couples choose Lab-Created Emeralds for their price, their high clarity, and their ease of maintenance. Both are beautiful, durable, and make excellent engagement rings!

Side by side comparison of Natural vs Lab Emerald engagement rings

(left) Natural Emerald engagement ring vs Lab Emerald engagement ring (right)

What color Emerald is best?

The top color for an Emerald is very slightly blueish Green. The slight blue tint gives your Emerald a regal look! That said, color is an incredibly personal choice. Some people love a super dark Emerald, some like Emeralds with a more yellowish tone! As the most important factor when choosing a colored stone is color, so don’t let anyone tell you to like something you don’t! For example, I love greyish toned gemstones, even though they are less valuable than their more vivid counterparts.

Side by side comparison of emerald color variations

(Left) medium-light very slightly yellowish green; medium-dark green (middle); medium-dark bluish green (right)

Are dark or light emeralds better?

The most valuable tone (meaning how light or dark an Emerald is) is medium-toned (so not too light, and not too dark). You want to be able to see green (not black), but also not have it be so light that it appears washed out. So, try to strike a happy medium.

What if my Emerald isn’t eye clean?

That’s ok! Most Emeralds are not eye-clean. Think of your Emerald’s jardin as its unique fingerprint – there’s not another one out there like it! Moreover, many people love Emeralds for their mossy, lush look. That includes its beautiful garden-like inclusions!

What cut is best for my Emerald?

As you would expect, Emerald cut is the traditional shape for Emeralds! However, Emeralds are beautiful in all shapes. Ovals and Pears are also common shapes, as their long facet patterns echo natural Emerald crystal shapes. Couples choosing a natural Emerald should be aware that because of their rarity, natural Emeralds may have some cutting and symmetry inconsistencies. That means that sometimes an Emerald may have a small flat area on a curve, or extra facets on one side. And that’s ok! Cutting inconsistencies occur because gem cutters try to keep as much weight for you as possible out of the small amount of Emerald material mined!

PS: If you’re choosing a lab-created Emerald, the sky is the limit! You can choose any size and shape, as gem scientists are growing and cutting it special for you.

Which metal is best for Emerald?

I love the look of an Emerald set in a yellow gold head with a white band, but it looks great in all metals! Yellow gold will bring out the color of an Emerald, while white metals (such as white gold or platinum) will give it a cooler tone. We suggest against rose gold, as pink and green are not as complimentary.

Ruby: The BEST Red Stone Engagement Ring!

Looking for the ultimate romantic engagement ring? Have you considered a ruby? Beautiful, rare, and passionate, ruby engagement rings are among the most loved and desired red stone engagement rings in history. Read on to learn how to pick a stunner!

What is a ruby?

Ruby is a beautiful, durable, and rare red stone! It is part of the gemstone family corundum, meaning sapphire is its sister! However, this crimson beauty is special. In fact, ruby is the only color of corundum with a special name. That’s right! All the other colors of corundum – and it spans the whole rainbow! – are simply called sapphire. That is because this red gem is significantly more rare than its sibling.

Do rubies make good engagement rings?

Yes! Rubies are one of the best engagement ring center stones because it is romantic, durable, and rare. As red is the most romantic color, red rubies are a natural choice! Also, being a 9 out of 10 on the hardness scale means this stone will stand up to daily wear and tear. In fact, it is the hardest natural gem on the planet, next to diamonds. Finally, they are a great choice for an engagement ring because they are rare, just like true love.

Do rubies sparkle?

Yes. However, it sparkles differently than diamond. Specifically, its sparkle is a subtle red and orange/pink, whereas diamond gives off an extreme rainbow and white sparkle. So, if intense sparkle is your goal, you may wish to consider red diamond (we offer natural and color enhanced red diamonds too!) That said, ruby’s sparkle is elegant and stunning! Take a look below!

Sparkle and shimmer!

Can you wear a ruby every day?

Sure! It is certainly hard enough to withstand daily wear and tear. That is because of this red stone’s 9/10 hardness on the Mohs Hardness Scale. As with any engagement ring (even diamond!), to keep it beautiful for everyday wear, we suggest keeping it clean and removing it before doing anything super physical.

Can rubies chip?

They can, however, it is fairly rare. As you’ve read, they are very hard! However, a hard enough knock against something can chip even a diamond. So, always remove your rings before doing anything physical, like working out, doing dishes, or yard work.

Who should wear a ruby engagement ring?

Couples that love color, want to express their passion, or want something unique. This is a fantastic choice for those who love having color in their lives. It is bright, beautiful, and eye-catching! Also, for those who love showing their love to the world, this red stone is a great choice. Its bright red color shows that you put your love first! Finally, because ruby is so rare, those who want a unique engagement ring should definitely consider ruby. Fine gems are even rarer than diamond!

Eva Longoria’s Engagement Ring

Who should not wear this red stone?

Couples that want the traditional “white” engagement ring or those with extremely physical jobs. Obviously, this red gem is not white. So, if the look you are going for is a traditional colorless engagement ring, this isn’t the right stone for you! Also, those with intensely physical jobs (such as those which would cause the stone to scrape against other stones or metal constantly) should consider a very low-set diamond (such as a rose-cut) instead.

Quality

What color ruby is most valuable?

The most valuable stones are vivid red with no visible inclusions. However, this gem comes in all sorts of shades, and they may be orangey, pinkish, or purplish as well. In order to be called a “ruby”, corundum must be at least 51% red (decidedly NOT 51% pink, orange, or purple). The most valuable color is actually known as “pigeon blood” (I know, right).

What is pigeon blood red ruby?

A pigeon blood ruby is a natural ruby with a vivid slightly purplish red color. Legend has it that the nickname “pigeons blood” arose in Burma (current day Myanmar) where these gems were traditionally set in pure yellow gold. Because of the striking warmth of the yellow metal, in order for the gem to appear vivid red (and not orangey), the stone needed a blue/purple tint. So, gem traders began to use this somewhat gruesome term to describe purplish-Red gems, as blood also has this blue/purple tint.

Fun fact! Setting in white gold, rose gold, or platinum? You don’t need (or want) a purplish-red pigeon blood color. A bright red stone is your goal!

How can you tell if a ruby is good quality?

The best quality stones are vivid red, eye clean, and well-cut. Color is the most important factor, so look for a red that is not too heavily tinted pink, orange, or purple. Next, check out the stone up close. Look for any eye-visible imperfections. An eye clean stone will look flawless without magnification. Finally, a well-cut gem will have even color throughout the stone (no washed-out pool or dark area in the center), and will have fairly symmetrical faceting (facets on the left are a mirror image of those on the right).

Notably, due to this stone’s rarity, natural rubies will almost always have small cutting variances. That is because cutters use small inconsistencies to cut the largest, cleanest stones! However, the overall look of your stone should be symmetrical, and any inconsistencies should not be distracting.

What does AAA Ruby mean?

Like diamonds, gemstones are judged by their quality and beauty. In colored gemstones, jewelers often use a B-AAA scale. “B” and “AB” quality stones are the least attractive, typically having no or low transparency and brilliance. “A” quality stones may have some visible inclusions but are more attractive. “AA” quality is a standard middle grade with good brilliance, cutting, and sparkle.

So, “AAA” is top quality in terms of color, clarity, cutting, and sparkle! To give you a visual, the poorly cut stone above would be an AB quality. On the other hand, the well-cut stone is an AAA! AAA rubies typically represent the top 10% of gems on the market. They are a more beautiful, richer red color, and their brilliance can’t be matched.

What is the transparency of a ruby?

High-quality faceted ruby is completely transparent. “Transparency” refers to light’s ability to travel through a gemstone. So, if your stone is “transparent” it means that light is able to enter and bounce around your gem to make sparkle! “Translucent” refers to when a stone has inclusions which make light appear more billowy or gauzy – there are no crisp sparkles. Finally when a gem is “opaque” it means that light cannot travel through it at all.

Gemologist’s note: Star rubies are translucent or opaque – that’s ok, they’re graded differently!

Translucent Star (Left); Opaque Star (Right)

Natural vs Lab Created

What is a lab-created ruby?

They are rubies…made in a lab! Interestingly, there is no chemical or visual difference between a natural and a lab-created gemstone (except that the lab stone will look more perfect!). So, when you choose a lab-created stone, you are getting the same beauty, hardness, and sparkle as its natural counterpart. The only difference is that it is made by man, and that it is a lot less expensive.

What are synthetic rubies?

“Synthetic” is another name for Lab-Created. Just make sure you’re not getting a “simulant.” A simulant is a red stone that looks like a ruby, but is glass, plastic, or some other gemstone.

Is a lab-created ruby a real ruby?

Yes! Lab-created stones are real! Natural and lab-created gems have the exact same chemical and optical properties – they are the same material! So, both natural and lab-created rubies are real. They just have different origins.

How can you tell the difference between real and synthetic rubies?

The only way to tell between a natural and a lab-created ruby is to have it tested. However, perfection in cutting + perfection in clarity can be a clue it is lab-created.

Example of Lab Created vs Natural Ruby

(Left) Lab Created vs Natural (Right)

How do you know a ruby is genuine?

While the only way to know for certain you have a ruby and not another red stone is to have it tested. Good indications of a natural ruby are inconsistencies in cutting, visible inclusions, and crisp facet edges. Even the highest quality natural stones will frequently have inconsistencies in cutting. This is because gem cutters will make an extra facet to cut off an imperfection, or leave the stone a little too long to add carat weight. So, if the red stone isn’t “perfect” looking, that’s a good clue that it may be natural.

Imperfections, or “inclusions”, are another way to tell. It is pretty rare that a synthetic stone has eye-visible inclusions. So, if your red stone has cracks or black spots, it is more likely to be natural. Finally, one way to tell ruby from other red stones is crisp facet edges. As it is a 9/10 on the hardness scale, it is less likely to chip.

What is glass-filled ruby?

Glass filling is an ill-advised treatment performed upon low quality “B” natural stones to make their inclusions less visible. It is not a permanent treatment, it will come out during normal ring cleaning. And, it makes a gem much less valuable. Unfortunately, these glass-filled stones are sometimes sold by unscrupulous dealers without a customer being aware. So, it is important to always purchase your gemstones from a jeweler with a sterling reputation. Always make sure to ask about your ruby’s treatment! The only acceptable treatment for a ruby is heat.

Rubies vs Garnet

Which is better garnet or ruby?

For an engagement ring, ruby is better than garnet due to is far greater durability. This is because garnet is only a 7-7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. And, dust is a 7/10. So, that means that every time a garnet ring is cleaned with a cloth, it gets micro scratches. This will dull the stone over time. As a result, when considering rubies vs garnet, garnet is typically better for an occasional-wear ring, not an engagement.

How can you tell a ruby from a garnet?

While you cannot be certain without testing it, good clues to tell garnet vs ruby apart include color, clarity, facet edges, and cost. In other words, while there are certain garnets that can rival the color of a ruby, most garnets are a transparent dark brownish-red. Most rubies of this color will be more included (less transparent). Also, due to its lower hardness, garnet will show scratches and chips. Finally, when comparing rubies vs garnet, a pretty garnet will only be a fraction of the cost.

Antique ruby vs Antique garnet (with micro chips)

Rubies vs Diamonds

Which is better ruby or diamond?

An AAA ruby is more unique, more colorful, and more rare than a diamond. A diamond, on the other hand, is harder, more brilliant, and more firey (remember those rainbow sparkles I was talking about?). So, it depends! Which do you like better when you compare rubies vs diamond?

Are rubies rarer than diamonds?

Yes, high-end AAA natural stones are rarer than diamonds!

Round Ruby Engagement Ring vs. Diamond Engagement Ring

Size & Cost

Are rubies measured in carats? How big is a 1-carat ruby?

Rubies are measured in carats, however, they are heavier than diamonds. So, a one-carat ruby will measure smaller than a one-carat diamond. For example, one carat round rubies measure around 5.7mm, whereas one carat round diamonds measure around 6.5mm. To work with this, it is best to figure out what millimeter size you want instead of carat weight.

How much is a 1-carat ruby worth?

A 6.5mm (the size of a 1 carat diamond) round AAA quality natural ruby is $4,500+, whereas a lab created 6.5mm is $880. Check out the table below to see how this compares against their sister sapphire, and lab-created stones, too!

Design Your Custom Engagement Ring: 6 Easy Steps

Have you dreamed up your own custom engagement ring? Do you have it all planned out down to teeny-tiny details? Or, do you love the idea of designing your own engagement ring, but need to know where to start? Read on below to learn how fast and easy it is to make your dream ring from your computer to your doorstep! Designing your own engagement ring is easy. Here’s how it works in six easy steps!

Custom vs Build Your Own Custom Engagement Ring

Real quick. There are many options out there that allow you to “build your own” engagement ring. This usually involves selecting one of several pre-made ring options, choosing a center stone, and having the jeweler combine them. A truly custom engagement ring, however, is one that is built from scratch! This means coming up with a unique idea and bringing it to life! So, with a custom engagement ring, the sky is the limit. Whatever colors, styles, or special details you want, you can have. Here’s how:

Step 1: Search for Photos

The first step of your journey is to come up with your special, bespoke design. Many couples look through Pinterest or Instagram to find design details they like. What’s great about doing a custom engagement ring is that you can add, subtract, and create whatever you want. So, look for bands that you like, prongs that you like, and unique details that may work for your ring. Also, decide on center stone size and shape, as well as band color. Some couples send us one photo, others send dozens, and still, others have sketched out their own idea. Do whatever works best for you – we can work with anything!

Step 2: Think of Special Details

Then, think about what makes you special as a couple. Perhaps your partner’s favorite color, a special hobby, or a unique personality trait? These details can be used to make your ring even more personal. A few special details I’ve used in custom engagement rings in the past include:

  • A “crown” setting for a bride that loves Disney Princesses;
  • Secret inclusion of the couple’s birthstones on the inside of the engagement ring band;
  • An extra halo of diamonds for a very sparkly bride; and
  • A compass setting for a couple that loved to sail.

As you can see, there are a ton of options! These little details make your ring one of a kind.

Step 3: Get a Free Quote within 24-48 hours!

Once you gather your favorite photos and ideas, email us here. Show us your inspo and let us know what you’re thinking, and we’ll give you a free quote within 24-48 hours. We give our couples custom ring setting quotes in multiple metal choices (such as white gold, platinum, and palladium). That way, you can choose what’s right for you (and on budget).

Do I need to have a center stone picked out first?

Nope. We find that the most helpful way of quoting a custom engagement ring is to let you know the cost of the setting without the center stone. This way, you can choose a center stone that fits your budget. To get your total quote, just add up the ring setting quote with the center stone of your choosing. There’s no sales tax if you ship outside of Texas. By the way, if you need help choosing a center stone, we’d be happy to help there, too.

Classic Engagement Rings: 4 Styles To Know About

We often hear that our couples want a classic engagement ring. To some people, classic means simple, like a solitaire engagement ring or a three stone engagement ring. To others, classic means historic, like a halo ring or a pave diamond ring. However, I think what we can all agree on is that a classic engagement ring is the opposite of a trendy one. In other words, couples that want a classic engagement ring want something that will always be in style. So, let’s look at engagement ring trends over the years, and see why these four classic ring styles have stood the test of time!

Engagement Ring History

The first diamond engagement ring was given in 1477 by the Archduke of Austria to his fiancee, Mary of Burgundy. I know, right? This goes way back! So, the first engagement ring trend was royal. However, as time went on, us common folk jumped on the bandwagon and wanted our own baubles too. Victorian couples (1837-1901) often chose colorful engagement rings, opting for amethyst, emerald, garnet, or sapphire in yellow or rose gold. Edwardian couples (1901-1910) began to increasingly favor mine cut diamonds, and often chose platinum. Our Art Deco era (1920s-1930s) continued in platinum, with Emerald and Asscher cuts reigning. In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky, a Belgian mathematician, published a doctorate paper on the ideal faceting of Round diamonds. This paper helped diamond cutters all over the world maximize sparkle! Shortly thereafter, “A Diamond is Forever” really took off, and Americans have never looked back.

American Engagement Ring Trends 1950-Today

1950s & 1960s

Cocktail rings, platinum, & 3 stone rings

Americans in the 1950s & 1960s loved a great big cocktail ring. I’m talking HUGE. Big clusters of diamonds, giant gemstone boulders, you name it. Couples looking for a more classic appeal during this time chose three stone engagement rings, often with baguette side stones.

1950s and 1960s engagement rings: halo ring and three stone engagement ring

1970s & 1980s

Heavy metal, Marquise cuts, Yellow gold, & “Ballerina” Halo rings

The 1970s & 1980s brought on the Marquise craze and allll the Yellow gold. Most of the Marquise diamonds you see today were first given in the 1970s & 1980s – and they’re now reset into fabulous modern settings. The 1980s also sparked a huge trend for “ballerina” Halo rings, as Princess Diana was given her famous Blue Sapphire engagement ring in 1981!

engagement rings from 1970s and 1980s in yellow gold

1990s & 2000s

Clusters, Princess cuts, Pave diamonds, & Solitaire engagement rings

Couples in the 1990s and the early aughts favored square looks and flocked to cluster-style rings that gave a big look for less money. Vintage-inspired rings with pave diamonds, meant to look like those popular in the 20s, also regained attention. In the late 1990s, Tiffany announced a new square-shaped diamond called the Lucida, and paired it with a simple, thick, platinum band. This spurred a whole new appreciation for the Solitaire engagement ring, and people everywhere wanted it.

1990s and 2000s engagement rings in white gold including pave diamond

2010 – Today

Multiple halos, Rose gold, & Ideal Round diamonds

Couples today continue to want a big bang for their buck, but have moved away from the cluster style, in favor of a more classic Halo ring. Multiple Halos are currently all the rage. And Rose gold is having a moment! Princess cuts continue to be a popular choice – they are the second most requested diamond shape. Couples looking for a truly classic look, however, are returning to the Round brilliant. The technology we have today helps couples choose a diamond with perfect angles – Tolkowsky would be proud.

classic engagement rings including double halo ring in rose gold and round brilliant diamond

Classic Engagement Ring Style

So what we’ve learned from history is that you need the following in order to have a truly classic engagement ring:

  • A center stone in a shape that isn’t “what everyone’s getting”
  • A metal color that is always in fashion
  • A style that is simple, clean, with high-end details

Shape

Two diamond shapes have been wildly popular for relatively brief periods of time in the past century: the Marquise and the Princess. The Marquise craze died in the early 1990s, and they have only recently begun resurfacing (in part due to high-end rings like Catherine Zeta-Jones’s). The Princess is still quite popular, though perhaps less so than in the 1990s and the early aughts. There have been no celebrity Princess cut engagement rings. As a result, the Princess cut could potentially lose its appeal in the future.

Bottom line: Couples looking for a classic engagement ring should stay away from “trendy” cuts, and instead choose a traditional shape, such as a Round, Cushion, or Emerald. These shapes have a long history of constant appeal.

Metal Color

White and yellow metals have always been loved. That is because Gold is naturally yellow, and platinum is naturally white. So, these colors spark a feeling of quality and comfort. While Yellow gold was huge in the 1970s and 1980s, this was simply an increase from its typical fan base. Rose gold, however, has had a few peaks in popularity over the course of the last century, and then falls away.

Bottom line: Couples looking for a classic engagement ring should stay away from “trendy” color, and instead choose a traditionally colored metal, such as white or yellow

Ring Style

Because people so often want to express their personality or keep up with the Joneses, engagement ring styles over the years show a pattern of super-expressive style and over-done ornament. However, because these styles change so rapidly, rings which attempt these feats can look dated.

Bottom line: Couples looking for a classic engagement ring should stay away from anything that has multiple rows, multiple colors, or a lot of ornament. Instead, choose a clean, simple look with a special touch, such as engraving or a small “peekaboo” flair.

The Top 4 Classic Engagement Ring Styles

Classic Engagement Ring Style #1: Solitaire Engagement Ring

Of course, the number one classic engagement ring style is the Solitaire engagement ring. This style is simple and minimal, making the center stone the star of the show. Solitaire engagement rings for Round diamonds are regularly made with 4 prongs and 6 prongs. 6 prong Solitaire engagement rings will accentuate the Round shape of the stone, while 4 prong Solitaire engagement rings will give a more minimal look. Both are stunning!

Classic Engagement Ring Style #2: 3-Stone Diamond Ring

The three-stone diamond ring is another popular option, most recently chosen by the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. A three stone engagement ring symbolizes your past, your present, and your future together. It may also symbolize the joining of two families into one, or the parents together with their children! Any way you slice it, three stone engagement rings are classic, timeless, and full of meaning.

Classic Engagement Ring Style #3: Pavé Diamonds

Another classic option is the pavé diamond ring. “Pavé” (pronounced pah-VAY) literally means diamonds paved into your band! As I originally hail from Boston, I tend to love this romantic notion, as it reminds me of my cobblestone streets. Pavé is a great choice for those who want a little extra sparkle in their engagement ring, but want to make sure the look remains timeless.

Engagement Ring Style #4: Simple Halo Ring

Some people think the Halo ring is a new trend, however, if you look back through history, it’s one of the most enduring designs out there. You just have to keep it simple. Overdoing a Halo can lead you to Joneses territory pretty fast. So, if you want a little extra bling, and like the look of a Halo ring, just keep it minimal. It will look gorgeous for the next century!

Are You Allergic to Your Wedding Ring?

It’s the classic story:

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy loses girl. Boy gets girl back. Boy marries girl. Girl develops allergies to wedding ring…

*Record scratch*

500Days

As you can see, being allergic to your wedding ring or engagement jewelry can put a damper on the whole Hollywood romance thing. However, the problem is relatively easy to solve with a little bit of knowledge and some precautions.

Here’s the deal:

What we want to avoid is a condition called “wedding-ring dermatitis,” a skin infection caused by a metal in your beautiful jewelry. It can strike years after you first say “I do” and put on the engagement ring.

What’s the cause of “wedding-ring dermatitis?”

The most common cause is an allergy to a metal in your ring. For most people, the culprit is nickel, which is included in various amounts in different jewelry, especially white gold engagement rings. That’s a big reason people will choose alternatives to gold, including platinum and palladium.  (read more about gold vs platinum jewelry here)

Allergies-Alternatives-for-Engagement-Rings

Nickel allergies are so common, in fact, that nickel was named Allergen of the Year in 2008. Apparently, nickel allergies affect about 24-36% of women and about 7-15% of men. So you’re not alone if you’ve got nickel allergies.

But here’s the crazy part:

You can develop nickel allergies at any time in your life. You could be married happily for 5 years when suddenly you develop allergies to your ring.

The other common cause of wedding-ring dermatitis is simply when moisture or soap get trapped under your ring. It can happen to anyone – allergies or not – and it can happen with any type of ring.

Both causes of irritation result in the same symptoms: a red, scaly rash under your ring that is itchy and annoying.

How Do You Tell The Difference?

Here’s a chart to explain the differences in causes:

AllergyIrritation
There’s nickel in your ringThere’s no nickel in your ring
Reaction comes on slowlyReaction comes on quickly
Reaction lasts longerIrritation clears up if you take the ring off and keep your finger clean and dry

Possible Solutions To Your Wedding Ring Allergies

First off, the best way to solve this problem is with prevention. Are you allergic to nickel? If you don’t know, you can tape a nickel coin to your arm for a day. If this results in a skin irritation, then you can assume you’re allergic.

If you have nickel allergies, look into alternative engagement and wedding rings. Rose gold is a good one. So is yellow gold. Indeed, platinum is wonderful as well. Whatever you do, ask your jeweler to make certain there is no nickel in your ring.

Check out this site for other nickel alternatives as well.

What if you developed nickel allergies late in the game?

Three possible solutions:

  1. Coat your ring in nail polish.
  2. Buy nickel guard.
  3. Have your jeweler plate the ring with rhodium.

None of these solutions are permanent, though. So you should have a long term plan as well.

If the problem isn’t allergies, but skin irritation, try these solutions:

  1. Use hand sanitizer instead of soap and water.
  2. Keep your hands dry.
  3. Use lotion on the affected spot.

In summary:

Prevention is best. If you’re allergic to nickel, look for alternatives that don’t contain nickel. The only way to be sure is to talk to your jeweler (call us!).

However, if allergies develop later, or if the irritation is due to trapped soap and moisture, there are steps you can take to resolve the issue (listed above).

A Primer On Gold Wedding and Engagement Rings

A Primer On Gold Wedding and Engagement Rings

Karats and Metal Alloys

To start, pure 100% gold is measured by 24 karats. This means that anything less than 24 karats has metal alloys in the mix, which produces the different colors in gold engagement rings. Since most gold jewelry is either of the 14k or 18k variety, let’s explain what these mean.

  • 14 karat gold is comprised of 58.3% gold.
  • 18 karat gold is comprised of 75% gold. 18k gold is more expensive and more vivid than 14k gold, but it is more prone to tarnishing (as it is softer). All golds are cheaper than platinum though.

Because there are different metal alloys used (and different percentages), we can make different colored gold wedding rings.

Colored Gold

While pure gold is a sort of reddish yellow, colored gold can be produced in a few different shades.

The color of different gold engagement rings is actually determined by two factors:

  1. The type of alloy metal alloys in the mix.
  2. The percentage of said metal alloys.

Let’s look at the different types of colored gold:

White Gold

White gold is a mix of gold and at least one white metal – probably nickel, manganese or palladium. The gold is then plated with a hard element called rhodium. The silver hue that embodies white gold engagement rings actually derives from the hard rhodium-plating.

(note: white gold is often the worst for allergies, as it nickel allergies are fairly common)

Here’s a good example of a white gold ring, our Einstein band:

Rose, Red, and Pink Gold

Rose gold is widely used for specialized jewelry. It is a beautiful and warm gold and copper alloy (good as an alternative for those with nickel allergies). Variations such as red or pink gold are in the same category – the only differences coming from the amount of copper in the mix.

Here’s a rule of thumb: the higher the copper content, the stronger red the ring will be.

Here’s one of our favorite rose gold wedding rings, the Dunia:

Yellow Gold

Yellow gold is what many people think of when they hear the world ‘gold.’ It is a distinct and warm yellow hue created by mixing pure gold with alloy metals like copper or zinc.

Here’s a photo of one of our favorite yellow gold wedding bands, the Tesla Band:

Purity

As explained previously, the gold engagement rings that you’re probably shopping for are not pure 100% gold. That would be 24k gold, and it would be far too soft to use in jewelry. Instead, in jewelry we use either 14k or 18k gold (58.3% gold and 75% gold respectively).

Which is better? Well, that’s all your preference. (note: read our guide on the differences between 14k and 18k rose gold for more information)

Here are the basic differences:

14k gold18k gold
58.3% gold75% gold
Less expensiveMore expensive
Less vividMore vivid
Less prone to tarnishingMore prone to tarnishing
Normal jewelryFine jewelry

Of course, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but this chart is a good heuristic.

Cost

As mentioned above, the cost of your gold engagement ring will depend on a few factors.

  1. The percentage of pure gold used.
  2. The types of alloys used.
  3. The craftsmanship of the ring.
  4. The market value gold.
  5. Where you buy it (taxes and whatnot)

Overall, though, gold rings are less expensive than platinum rings and are more expensive than silver rings.

Maintenance

Certain gold rings are more subjected to wear and tear than other rings (higher karat gold, especially). However, there are multiple ways you can care for your ring (we even put together this guide on cleaning your engagement ring).

Do Amore also offers free maintenance if you purchase a ring through our site (probably our second best benefit – behind providing two people with water for life!)
